ODESSA, MO ( Sept 20th, 2008) – ASA Late Models USST Trucks and I-70 regular weekly classes filled the pits of the famed I-70 high banks for the World Cup 2008 event this weekend. Race teams from 14 states traveled to run what may have been the last major event on the famed high banks.
Enduros
Enduro 15 lap action began with a fierce crash that sent Mary Cross to the hospital with critical injuries. Mark LaFoe took the lead at the drop of the green flag and raced hard to stay out front. Robert Rodriguez had different ideas though as he worked thru the pack picking off cars lap after lap. By the 10thlap Rodriguez was on LaFoe’s bumper and after a couple of laps battle – Rodriguez moved to the front on lap 12. Rodriguez went on to take the checkers for the first time this season with LaFoe as runner-up. Tommy Speakman was third – Tommy “the tank” Dunmire was fourth and Kevin Hunt took home fifth place honors. Danny Anders and LaFoe won heat races. Anders captured the 2008 Enduro Championship.
Superstocks
Superstock 12 lap action went all green flag laps as Brad Johnson took the lead at the green and never looked back en route to his second feature win of the season. Brandon Davis and Mark Spillman reeled in Johnson in late laps but were never able to challenge as they finished two – three. Rodney Phillips was fourth and John Thomason who won his second heat event of the year rounded out the top five. Mark Spillman was crowned 2008 Super Stock champion.
Dash Cars
Dash 15 lap feature racing was the only class close enough in points to have a possible championship battle. Robert Isabell and Michael Deschenes each won their heat event keeping points even. Ashley Deschenes was the early leader until Jason Isabell powered by on lap two. A yellow and a small melee on the track ended with Robert Isabell and Jeremy Roberts tangling and Isabell’s night ending as his front wheel ended up pointing in a bad way the wrong way. Jason Isabell did a great job of taking his third feature win holding off Michael Deschenes who was runner-up and helping brother Robert clinch the season points. Ashley Deschenes finished behind her husband with David Russell fourth and Dave Walker fifth. Robert takes home his first season points title in the Dash class.
Super Trucks
USST Super Truck Challenge was 100 laps of fierce competition and some incredible events in the night’s action. Randy Price began the event up front taking the pole position based on fast qualifying time. Brad Sams was the outside qualifier. Price looked strong out front early, but the Raytown Rocket Ronnie Hartford was on the move taking 3rdspot by lap 5 and second place following a caution for Damon Clevenger and Jim Gochenour. Disaster struck a few laps later as Hartford’s right front tire began going down and his super fast truck pushed up in every corner finally causing him to spin a short time later. While in the pits Hartford went a lap down to the field. With a new right front he picked off cars until lap 33 when a yellow came out – Hartford missed the “lucky dog” which would put him back on the lead lap. At the halfway point all trucks stops for fuel – soon after the restart Hartford passed leader Price and was back to the rear of the field. The Rocket was not to be denied – a lap 73 caution pulled Price back in and on lap 85 Hartford took over the lead cruising to victory. Price was runner-up and Brad Sam’s finished third – the only other competitor on the lead lap. JJ Sonnevelt and Eric Caudell rounded out the top five spots. Hartford is the Super Truck champion as well at I-70 and was undefeated at the high banks in a super truck this year – 7 for 7. Hartford also captured the Late Model points for the season
